Help Save the Historic Lathrop House
The Lathrop house in Sylvania Ohio was once owned by Rev. Lucian Lathrop
(son
of John #399) and his son Miles from about 1847 until after 1880.
Rev. Lucian is reputed to have been a vocal opponent of slavery and defender
of freedom and Christian morals. He joined the Unitarian Church in order
to uphold and act on his Christian beliefs by preaching from the pulpit
and serving as an inspiration to Sylvania then as now. It is reputed that
Rev. Lucian sheltered slaves in a secret room in the basement and transported
them safely to Canada and freedom. Rev. Lucian also joined the Free-Soil
Party in an attempt to change the political climate of the day. After emancipation
Rev.Lucian is reputed to have welcomed the former slaves back into his
home and offered them employment. Sylvania Ohio has lived with the rumor
of slaves being brought to freedom for 150 years and those rumors are becoming
fact with every passing day. There is much disagreement about the claimed
role of this Underground-Railroad "Station" however. Please read further
the story of this home, a devoted Christian family, and the ensuing battle
to protect this home from demolition. Your most needed involvement will
help get this home on the list of the National Trust. Your aid is a
prerequisite and an imperative in the effort to preserve this historical
landmark.
